De 1991 a 2014, ocupó la cátedra Oriel y Laing de Interpretación de la Sagrada Escritura en la Universidad de Oxford y fue fellow del Oriel College. Además de su carrera académica, es sacerdote ordenado en servicio en la Iglesia de Inglaterra desde 1973.
