The novel explores these issues more personally, through the character of Rachel Vinrace, a young woman whose 'voyage out' to South America opens up powerful encounters with her fellow-travellers, men and women. As she begins to understand her place in the world, she finds the happiness of love, but also sees its brute power. Woolf has a sharp eye for the comedy of English manners in a foreign milieu; but the final undertow of the novel is tragic as, in some of her finest writing, she calls up the essential isolation of the human spirit. VIRGINIA WOOLF Adeline Virginia Woolf 1882-1941 was an English writer, whose innovative, experimental novels have had a lasting effect on the development of modern literature. Her books, such as 'Mrs Dalloway', 'The Waves' and 'To the Lighthouse', with their stream-of-consciousness structure, have led her to be recognised as one of the most significant writers of the twentieth century. Nació en medio de una familia estrechamente vinculada al circuito artístico e intelectual de la época pero nunca asistió al colegio formal. Desde sus primeros años compartió con figuras como Henry James o Julia Margaret Cameron, al tiempo que despertó un interés vital por los libros. Pese a su temprano oficio de escritora y rol crucial en el mítico grupo Boomsbury -junto a Bertrand Russell y Ludwig Wittgenstein-, Woolf no publicó sino hasta los treinta y tres años. Fin de viaje 1915 fue su primera novela, y aunque no generó la misma repercusión que sus siguientes libros, destacó por su tono agudo y satírico. Dos años después, junto a su marido Leonard Woolf, fundó la crucial editorial artesanal Hogarth Press, donde publicaron autores como Freud, Mansfield y Eliot. Sin embargo, la crítica no lo consideró un libro relevante. Con su tercera novela, El cuarto de Jacob 1922 , deformó las estructuras tradicionales del género y desarrolló una escritura de corte más experimental. Posteriormente, escribió las obras que la consolidaron como una de las autoras icónica siglo XX: La señorita Dalloway 1925 , Al faro 1927 , Orlando 1928 y Las olas 1931 , son solo algunas de sus obras destacadas. Woolf también escribió una larga listas de artículos, cuentos, biografías y ensayos, como Un cuarto propio 1929 , que la situó en un lugar imprescindible para los feminismos contemporáneos. Con los años, lo que probablemente fue un trastorno bipolar, comenzó a mermar su vida y su trabajo literario. Los abruptos cambios de ánimo, los recurrentes estados depresivos y la impotencia de no poder escribir, fueron los motivos que la llevaron a cruzar el jardín con los bolsillos de su abrigo lleno de piedras y sumergirse en el río Ouse el veintiocho de marzo de 1941.
