Estudió en la Academia de Cine de Pekín y posteriormente se trasladó a Reino Unido para continuar sus estudios en la National Film and Television School. Ha desarrollado su trabajo tanto en la literatura como en el cine documental y de ficción. Es autora de novelas redactadas en chino y en inglés, entre las que se encuentran Lenguaje de amor chino para principiantes y Una memoria autobiográfica de nueve capítulos. Sus obras literarias han sido traducidas a más de veinte idiomas y sus películas se han exhibido en diversos festivales internacionales. Reside y trabaja en Londres.
