Stoker 1847-1912 wrote many other works of some merit, but achieved lasting fame through his iconic invention. Stoker fue un escritor irlandés, conocido especialmente por una obra tan inmortal como el personaje que le da título: Drácula. Hasta los siete años, Stoker sufrió una parálisis que le impedía andar. Sin embargo, en su juventud destacó como futbolista en la Trinity University de Dublín, donde se graduó en matemáticas y no fue hasta 1890 que publicó su primera novela: El paso de la serpiente y, siete años después, vio la luz su indudable obra maestra. La estructura de Drácula es muy ingeniosa, ya que vamos conociendo al temible vampiro mediante cartas o diarios de la gente que, de alguna manera, se va cruzando con él, lo cual resulta más intrigante y terrorífico que si se nos presentara el personaje directamente. Su éxito y popularidad hasta nuestros días es tal, que Drácula es sinónimo de vampiro. Para crear este personaje, Stoker se basó en leyendas del folclore europeo y en la figura de Vlad Tepes, un príncipe de Valaquia que pasó a la historia con el terrorífico sobrenombre de El empalador.
