Ha publicado las novelas Las viudas de los jueves, Tuya, Elena sabe, Las grietas de Jara, Betibú, Un comunista en calzoncillos, Una suerte pequeña, Las maldiciones, Catedrales y El tiempo de las moscas. En 2018, Alfaguara publicó sus cuentos reunidos en Quién no. Por su obra literaria, teatral y periodística, ha obtenido diversos premios nacionales e internacionales, entre otros el Premio Clarín de Novela, el Premio Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, el Premio Rosalía de Castro del PEN Club de Poetas, Ensayistas y Narradores de Galicia , el Premio Best Novel del Festival Valencia Negra y fue finalista del International Booker Prize 2022 con la traducción de Elena sabe al inglés.
