Escritor y poeta, considerado el máximo exponente de la literatura alemana, Goethe, mostró de pequeño una inteligencia superior y una curiosidad insaciable que lo llevaron a estudiar griego, latín, hebreo y francés, así como también historia, geología, química y medicina. En Estrasburgo, en 1770, mientras terminaba sus estudios de abogacía, conoció a Friederike Brion, quien sería fuente de inspiración para sus primeros poemas, y al filósofo y teórico del arte Johann von Herder, quien lo inició en la lectura de los clásicos greco-latinos. Imbuido en el espíritu romántico del movimiento Sturm und Drang,«Tormenta e Impulso», publicó en 1773 la novela epistolar Las penas del joven Werther, que tuvo un éxito rotundo en toda Europa. En 1794 entabló una intensa pero tormentosa amistad con el dramaturgo Friedrich Schiller, a quien admiraba. En aquellos años comenzó a escribir su poema dramático Fausto, que se convertiría en su obra cumbre. Goethe alcanzó fama mundial, y hasta Napoleón lo visitó en su casa; sin embargo, tras su muerte en 1832 cayó en el olvido durante años. Sus últimas palabras recuerdan las ansias de sus personajes: «¡Luz! ¡Más luz!».
