Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley tiene un lugar en el olimpo de la literatura gracias a una obra brillante y seminal: Frankenstein o el moderno Prometeo. Hija única de un matrimonio de intelectuales, el filósofo William Godwin y la escritora y pionera del feminismo, Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary recibió una educación exquisita. Siendo apenas una adolescente, en 1812 conoció al poeta Percy Shelley y se fugó con él a Francia. Se casaron en 1816, cuando la primera esposa del poeta se suicidó. El verano de ese año, la pareja coincidió en una villa en Suiza con John Polidori y Lord Byron. Este último, a modo de juego, retó a sus amigos a escribir una historia de terror.
