Tras una juventud marcada por trabajos ocasionales y viajes, comenzó a colaborar con medios locales y luego con publicaciones nacionales. En la década de 1960 escribió reportajes sobre motociclistas que dieron origen a su libro "Hell's Angels", donde combinó investigación y narración personal. Posteriormente desarrolló el estilo conocido como periodismo "Gonzo", caracterizado por la presencia del autor dentro de la historia. Publicó artículos en Rolling Stone y obras como "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas", que exploraron la política y la cultura estadounidense.
