En 1967 publicó Hell's Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs; en 1971 apareció Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream; en 1973 salió Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72; recopiló sus ensayos en The Great Shark Hunt The Gonzo Papers Vol. 1 1979 , Generation of Swine The Gonzo Papers Vol. 2 1988 , Songs of the Doomed The Gonzo Papers Vol. 3 1990 y Better Than Sex The Gonzo Papers Vol. 4 1994 ; en 1983 publicó The Curse of Lono; en 1998 vio la luz The Rum Diary; en 2003 apareció Kingdom of Fear. Su estilo irrenunciable y la fusión de crónica y ficción dieron origen al periodismo Gonzo e influyeron a generaciones de escritores. Se quitó la vida el 20 de febrero de 2005 en su rancho de Woody Creek, Colorado.
