Beyond Good and Evil 1886 is a scathing and powerful critique of philosophy, religion and science. Here Nietzsche presents us with problems and challenges that are as troubling as they are inspiring, while at the same time outlining the virtues, ideas, and practices which will characterise the philosophy of the future. Relentless, energetic, tirelessly probing, he both determines that philosophy's agenda and is himself the embodiment of the type of thought he wants to foster. FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE When the German philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche 1844 - 1900 lapsed into insanity in 1889, he had little conception of the fame and controversy his works would come to attract. Initially influential on writers such as George Bernard Shaw and Thomas Mann, his ideas would be misappropriated by the Nazis in the 1930s to support their policies on anti-Semitism, nationalism and warfare. It would be some years, and with the benefit of better translations, before his works would become more properly evaluated. Nació en el seno de una familia protestante y su padre era pastor luterano, por lo que pasó buena parte de su infancia inmerso en un ambiente religioso. Cursó sus estudios en Filología Clásica y Teología en las universidades de Bonn y Leipzig. Durante esta época comenzó a interesarse por la cultura helenística, de la que recibió importantes influencias. Otros teóricos como Schopenhauer o el compositor Richard Wagner también dejaron una profunda huella en su ideología. Nietzsche ejerció la docencia durante un tiempo, pero la abandonó decepcionado por el academicismo universitario. Entró en un periodo reflexivo y de soledad en el que comenzó a cuestionarse los problemas de la existencia humana. Su primera obra publicada en 1872, "El nacimiento de la tragedia", exploraba la relación entre filosofía y arte. Posteriormente, publicó otras reflexiones entre las que destaca "Así habló Zaratustra" 1883-1885 . Nietzsche fue muy crítico con la religión y la supuesta naturaleza racional del hombre. En sus escritos reflejaba ideas como la muerte de Dios, el perspectivismo o la necesidad de establecer nuevos valores que reemplazaran los tradicionales y conformaran al superhombre. A pesar de que su pensamiento ha sido objeto de controversias, el impacto de su legado filosófico en la cultura occidental es indiscutible.
