Es un escritor británico especializado en literatura infantil, juvenil y ficción literaria. Creció en una familia católica de clase trabajadora y se trasladó en su infancia a Sherburn in Elmet, cerca de Leeds. Estudió Filosofía y Política en la Universidad de Manchester, donde obtuvo una licenciatura y una maestría, y más tarde completó un doctorado en la Open University con una tesis sobre la belleza masculina en el siglo XVIII. Su experiencia escolar en Corpus Christi Catholic College, que él describe como traumática pero formativa, ha influido profundamente en sus obras. Ha ganado varios premios, entre ellos el Carnegie Medal en 2020 por su novela "Lark", y el Booktrust Teenage Prize en 2006 por "Henry Tumour".
