Obtuvo un doctorado en pedagogía aplicada a la enseñanza del inglés y fue durante muchos años profesor de inglés en la Universidad de Formación Docente de Graz. Es también practicante avanzado de programación neurolingüística. Durante casi tres décadas ha investigado la aplicación práctica de la psicología cognitiva y la neurociencia al aprendizaje de idiomas. Ha escrito numerosos libros y materiales didácticos, entre ellos Teaching Young Learners to Think publicado en 2012 junto con Marion Williams.
