His rescue by Kitty Wu, a gentle Chinese girl, leads to their poignant and tenuous love. Like some of Auster's earlier protagonists, Fogg senses he has a kindred, submerged or vanished other self. Here, it is Fogg's father, who went into eclipse before his birth; the quest for the parent forms a narrative thread. When Fogg serves as reader companion to the elderly cripple Barber, aka "Effing," who recounts his adventures in a Western wilderness where he buried a cache of paintings, Fogg's fate takes an unexpected turn. Auster's highly literate tale teases the boundaries between fiction and actuality while exploring the process of writing itself. PAUL AUSTER Paul Auster is the best-selling author of Man in the Dark, The Brooklyn Follies, The Book of Illusions, The New York Trilogy, among many other works. In 2006 he was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize for Literature and inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Among his other honours are the Independent Spirit Award for the screenplay of Smoke and the Prix Medicis Etranger for Leviathan. He has also been short-listed for both the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award The Book of Illusions and the PEN Faulkner Award for Fiction The Music of Chance . Por muchos hechos que se cuenten, por muchos datos que se muestren, lo esencial se resiste a ser contado.» Y sin embargo, su condición de narrador quizá pueda explicarse a partir de La invención de la soledad 1982 . El padre de Auster había muerto y atrás quedaban sus traducciones del francés, sus poemas como «puños cerrados», sus obras entre bambalinas como «negro» literario y sus estudios de literatura francesa, italiana e inglesa en la Universidad de Columbia. De su quehacer lírico había nacido una prosa elegante y depurada. La trilogía de Nueva York 1987 fue su obra consagratoria. En ella, el azar lleva a los protagonistas a asumir distintas identidades dentro de una compleja arquitectura narrativa de espejismos metaficcionales, una pesadilla urbana teñida de enfermedad, locura y fracaso. El Palacio de la Luna 1989 y Leviatán 1992 , ganadora del Premio Médicis, son otras de sus obras más destacadas. En 2006 recibió el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras como reconocimiento a la renovación literaria que supuso la unión de las tradiciones norteamericana y europea. Para Auster, las palabras del célebre dramaturgo Peter Brook bien podrían definir la aspiración final de su obra: que posea a un tiempo «la intimidad de lo cotidiano y la distancia del mito, porque sin cercanía no es posible el sentimiento y sin distancia es imposible el asombro».
