Estudió Literatura Inglesa en Downing College, Cambridge, y se formó artísticamente en Chelsea School of Art. Es mundialmente reconocido por sus colaboraciones con el autor Roald Dahl, ilustrando obras como Matilda y Charlie y la fábrica de chocolate. Fue el primer Children's Laureate del Reino Unido 1999-2001 y recibió la Medalla Kate Greenaway y el Premio Hans Christian Andersen. En 2013 fue nombrado Caballero Bachelor por sus servicios a la ilustración. Su estilo se caracteriza por trazos dinámicos y el uso de acuarela.
