En 2006 fue nombrado embajador de buena voluntad del ACNUR Alto Comisionado de Naciones Unidas para los Refugiados . En 2007 Khaled puso en marcha la Fundación Khaled Hosseini, destinada a proporcionar ayuda humanitaria al pueblo de Afganistán para aliviar su sufrimiento y contribuir a crear prósperas comunidades.
