Sus dos primeros libros, antologados en Pájaros en la boca y otros cuentos 2018 , obtuvieron los premios del Fondo Nacional de las Artes y Casa de las Américas. Siete casas vacías 2015 recibió los premios Narrativa Breve Ribera del Duero y National Book Award. Algunos de sus cuentos fueron publicados en revistas como Granta, The Paris Review, The New Yorker, Harper's Magazine o McSweeney's y distinguidos, entre otros, con los premios Haroldo Conti, Juan Rulfo y O'Henry. Llevada al cine en 2021, la novela Distancia de rescate 2014 fue premiada con el Tigre Juan, El Ojo Crítico, Shirley Jackson y Tournament of Books y finalista del Booker Internacional, nominación que se reiteró con Kentukis 2018 .
