MARK TWAIN Mark Twain's real name was Sam Clemens, and he was born in 1835 in a small town on the Mississippi, one of seven children. He smoked cigars at the age of eight, and aged nine he stowed away on a steamboat. He left school at 11 and worked at a grocery store, a bookstore, a blacksmith's and a newspaper, where he was allowed to write his own stories (not all of them true). He then worked on a steamboat, where he got the name 'Mark Twain' (from the call given by the boat's pilot when their boat is in safe waters). Eventually he turned to journalism again, travelled round the world, and began writing books which became very popular. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn are his most famous novels. He poured the money he earned from writing into new business ventures and crazy inventions, such as a clamp to stop babies throwing off their bed covers, a new boardgame, and a hand grenade full of extinguishing liquid to throw on a fire. With his shock of white hair and trademark white suit Mark Twain became the most famous American writer in the world. He died in 1910. Edad recomendada: A partir de 11 años. TWAIN MARK Samuel Langhorne Clemens, más conocido como Mark Twain, fue un periodista, escritor y humorista estadounidense que nació en Florida, Misuri, el 30 de noviembre de 1835 y que falleció en Connecticut el 21 de abril de 1910. Llamado por William Faulkner "el padre de la literatura americana", Twain escribió más de 500 obras, comenzando su carrera como tipógrafo, y viajando de ciudad en ciudad y de una imprenta a otra. Poco a poco se desarrolló como periodista, época en la que adoptó el pseudónimo de Mark Twain, pero sus visiones críticas contra el racismo, el esclavismo y otros temas sociales conflictivos truncaron esta vocación; fue mediante sus relatos y novelas con las que finalmente obtuvo reconocimiento, siendo conocidas hoy en día sobre todo Las aventuras de Tom Sawyer 1976 y Las aventuras de Huckleberry Finn 1984 , considerada esta última por muchos como "la gran novela americana". A pesar de su inmenso éxito como escritor, varias malas inversiones y el engaño de sus editores lo obligaron a sobrevivir a base de dar conferencias por todo el mundo. Se casó con su gran amor, a quien estuvo cortejando por carta durante un año, y tuvo con ella cuatro hijos, aunque tres de ellos murieron antes que él, al igual que su esposa.
