Se crio en San Francisco y estudió en la Universidad de Pensilvania y en el St. John's College de la Universidad de Cambridge. Es conocida por sus novelas, entre ellas El tiempo es un canalla, que ganó el Premio Pulitzer de Ficción en 2011, y Manhattan Beach, una novela histórica ambientada en la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
