Es conocido por sus novelas policíacas, especialmente las protagonizadas por el detective Harry Bosch, un personaje inspirado en el pintor flamenco El Bosco. También ha creado otras sagas como El abogado del Lincoln y Renée Ballard. Antes de dedicarse a la escritura, Connelly trabajó como periodista en el Los Angeles Times, cubriendo noticias de crímenes.
