Estudió Literatura Inglesa en la Universidad de Oxford y en 2008 se convirtió en miembro del All Souls College, donde trabaja como investigadora en literatura renacentista. Entre sus libros para niños se encuentran Rooftoppers 2013 , The Wolf Wilder 2015 y The Explorer 2017 , ganador del premio Costa. También ha publicado libros de no ficción: The Golden Mole, un catálogo de extraordinarios animales en peligro de extinción, y Super-Infinite: The Transformations of John Donne, que ganó el premio Baillie Gifford de no ficción.
