Tras una infancia marcada por la pérdida de su padre y su hermana, estudió en escuelas británicas y luego trabajó para una empresa petrolera en África. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial fue piloto de combate en la Royal Air Force, experiencia que inspiró sus primeros relatos.
