Por muchos hechos que se cuenten, por muchos datos que se muestren, lo esencial se resiste a ser contado.» Y sin embargo, su condición de narrador quizá pueda explicarse a partir de La invención de la soledad 1982 . El padre de Auster había muerto y atrás quedaban sus traducciones del francés, sus poemas como «puños cerrados», sus obras entre bambalinas como «negro» literario y sus estudios de literatura francesa, italiana e inglesa en la Universidad de Columbia. De su quehacer lírico había nacido una prosa elegante y depurada. La trilogía de Nueva York 1987 fue su obra consagratoria. En ella, el azar lleva a los protagonistas a asumir distintas identidades dentro de una compleja arquitectura narrativa de espejismos metaficcionales, una pesadilla urbana teñida de enfermedad, locura y fracaso.
