JAMES JOYCE James Augustine Aloysius Joyce 2 February 1882 - 13 January 1941 was an Irish novelist, poet and literary critic. He contributed to the modernist avant-garde movement and is regarded as one of the most influential and important writers of the 20th century. Joyce's novel Ulysses 1922 is a landmark in which the episodes of Homer's Odyssey are paralleled in a variety of literary styles, particularly stream of consciousness. Other well-known works are the short-story collection Dubliners 1914 , and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man 1916 and Finnegans Wake 1939 . JOYCE JAMES James Augustine Aloysius Joyce nace en Dublín el 2 de febrero de 1882 y cursa casi la totalidad de sus estudios con los jesuitas, de los que nunca renegará del todo. Estudia Lenguas Modernas en la universidad y con veinte años marcha a París para estudiar Medicina y convertirse en un escritor. Tras regresar a Dublín para asistir a la muerte de su madre, lleno de proyectos frustrados y convencido de que seguir en su país sería enterrarse en vida, marcha definitivamente al Continente en 1904 con Nora, la que será su mujer hasta el día de su muerte. Escribe simultáneamente la novela autobiográfica Stephen Hero y la colección de cuentos Dublineses, al tiempo que se gana la vida como profesor de inglés. Vive en Pola, en Trieste, en Roma, otra vez en Trieste. Publica Dublineses y transforma su novela autobiográfica en el definitivo Retrato del artista adolescente. Ya famoso, escribe Ulises y se marcha a vivir a París con su familia para atender la publicación. Los siguientes dieciséis años los dedica a escribir Finnegans Wake, la obra más difícil de la literatura. No mucho después de su conclusión, en plena guerra, enero de1941, muere y es enterrado en Zúrich.
